Thursday Seeds | Cry Fowl and Greet the Cheers

    January 16, 2025 /

Winter in a southern state means that the birds are thinking about heading back north. They don’t do this is three days and live in a specific region the rest of the time like the snowbird humans of Florida. This is their part of life. They thrive on the move from place to place. Internal wiring helps them navigate to the kind oasis where what they need is plentiful with less dangers. Berries of various shrubs are still available in a southern state. The cedar waxwings usually arrive for several days in January or February depending on the crop. If there aren’t that many, they don’t stay for long. If…

Thursday Seeds | The October Ball

    January 9, 2025 /

The Ball beginning:  So much to remember and go back through from the evening. This was something to unpack, there were feelings of excitement and a vibe not seen in a dance club since the old days at the mill. The lighting was similar. The walls are not stone but dark and the lights are strobed into colors and blue. The music was fantastic and the costumes were an adventure to look at. Makeup and dresses, kilts and tresses. It was a vampire ball not to be seen before. The lights splash the dance floor but not too much light, many patterns. The place was full of beauty last night.…

Thursday Seeds | Bury the Owls

    January 2, 2025 /

What happens when the Owl dies? Was it by natural means? If the death is due to a car, then it’s a murder or an accident. What happens to the feathered friend? If this were the ocean, a shark or other eater of the like would take care of things. For land and air, vultures will do it too. The problem is that vultures tend to be smart enough to know that it won’t work out too well for them on the pavement. Feathered bodies and cars with dents. Who cares about the dents on the car? The car owner. Who cares about the family member missing who is the…

Thursday Seeds | Mourning with the Doves

    December 19, 2024 /

What’s your first thought? Mourning with the Doves. That’s what is sounds like…when Doves cry. But if you know much about birds, and doves are more common than most but not as much a nuisance as pigeons or crows. They make a sound that is lonely and communicates solitude to most humans. It’s like it’s hardwired, this sound being considered lonely but in fact, birders know that this sound is about mating. It’s a mating call given right before sex. It’s foreplay, this sound to the doves.  If you watch them, the one doing the calling is about to hop on the female to do the “deed”. Crying. Hopefully I…
