Feeling that scratchy in your throat? What do you drink?

Wow! It’s been almost a decade ago when I traveled pretty regularly to the Netherlands for work.  In my time there, I found that Irish pubs seemed to help cure the homesickness that comes with an extended stay abroad.  With the jetlag and candle burning at both ends due to work, (teehee! …now I MAKE the candles and burn them at my leisure!) it was easy to develop a scratchy throat from being run down.  The feature at the irish pub would of course include Irish whiskey by the name of Jameson.  The cure was almost immediate! I began to order the drink just to study what they did to make it!!  Some call it Hot toddy, others Hot Whiskey…I call it curative elixir! It’s beyond simple to make!

Hot water, Fresh lemon slice, 3 cloves embedded in lemon wedge, 1 shot of Jameson whiskey. THAT is all! Too simple? Just try it!

What do you drink when you are a bit under the weather?

Okay, this sounds soooooo good. I usually just use Anne-Marie’s technique of hot water w/honey.

I am going to try it even if I don’t have a sore throat! Thanks for the recipe.

Well Luci, funny you should ask that question! For that very night, we ran out of Jameson Irish Whiskey! *gasp* So a bit of experimentation went on! First, if you aren’t a spirits kind of person, it works nicely with almost any herbal tea.

Now if you are looking for the toddy part and your Jameson bottle is empty, mandarin flavored vodka is NOT your substitute! (hope you are laughing because I am!) I’ve done blended scotch and been mildly happy with it. Non flavored vodka isn’t too bad. A clear rum may also work. For me, it really is best with the Jameson Irish whiskey as the flavors balance nicely and are not over powering. I know the stigma of whiskeys…but if you are ever out, order one. How’s that for long winded?

Southern Comfort! Good idea! It’s a whiskey that is light in color…not sure why but that seems to matter with taste. Did you know that Southern Comfort’s creator, Heron was born in Ireland and steeped in New Orleans tradition? Just learned that. 🙂
