Herbs to plant = Herbie heaven!
There is something so gratifying about setting plants in fertile soil. They just look healthy and green in the contrast to the rich black to red soil that they sit in. Yes, red clay is a way of life in Georgia. As long as it has a balance of other nutrients, it’s becomes a necessary if not welcomed component of good garden soil. This week, it is herb planting time at Rock Star Farms. The farm has grown by leaps and bounds over this past year. Last year, the medicine wheel was sporting many vegetables along side herbs. This year, vegetable garden beds surround the medicine wheel. The wheel can…

Greens for the "green" month
I have all these greens this month that I’ve been getting from Rock Star Farms CSA. What do I do with them all? Discussions are beginning to take shape among the CSA members. Here are a few things that I do with them. I’m considering making this dish tonight with my Collards from Rock Star Farms Winter CSA: Collards and Potatoes . We’ll see if Canada is as good at Collards as they are hockey! :-O Save your own environment by not cooking your collards till they are beyond mush! This tidbit of advice goes for any green veggie you get your hands on. All those wonderful vitamins are long gone…

Martini Art of Passion
I admit it. I’m in love with Etsy! I’m in love with the idea of a community of handmade artists that thrive on making something of basic ingredients. It’s what drew me to soapmaking and beyond. It’s a milestone on my own path’s journey and it’s all over this blog. Etsy is one of many such communities but for some reason, I tend to go back there. Sometimes you meet up with an artist and you never hear or see them again say at artist markets, random stop on vacation, etc. The neat thing about etsy is that you can easily get back to that artist you bought…

Herbal Drops – Candy with a health kick
As an avid reader of many things herbal, the magazine sporting the name of The Essential Herbal is of course a favorite. Several issues back, there was an article on making horehound cough drops. Since then, I’ve gone from “very much like” to extreme obsession of Elderberry. The idea of using this herb/fruit to ward off flu strains instead of vaccinations has been a lot of my motivation to learn more. (If you ask my friends, few conversations about health don’t contain the word elderberry. It’s why I say obsessed.) Last week, we made lovely herbal drops without horehound or even peppermint anywhere in sight! Elderberry and lemon balm were…

Last Thursday's Atlanta Botanical Garden Lecture
Some days you just need a good excuse to travel downtown into the City! Atlanta is a beautiful city of trees. Sometimes it’s hard to stop everything and take the time to drive down. I’ve just joined the Atlanta Botanical Garden to do just that! This lecture series is one of several nudges to do so. As I learn more about the gardens, I’m sure I’ll understand a bit why they call this lecture a part of the Alston Lecture series. What drew me to the lecture? Two main things. It was free and the topic was plants as medicine. A talk on plants…does it send you into the idea…

Numen: The Nature of Plants – A MUST HAVE DVD!
There is a new DVD on herbs and medicine that from the looks of the 15 minute demo, is a t-total must have! Dare I say, A Dr. Flower’s Essential! Numen: The Nature of Plants. What is it? Numen as defined in the 15 min demo, is the animated force in ALL things living. Here are a few other facts I picked up: The 4th leading cause of death in our country is the APPROPRIATE use of medications. (Does that astonish you? It sort of takes me a back…) Cancer, heart disease…yep, we are almost intimate with them but appropriate use of medications?? Omega-3 oils (in chloroplast) is the fundamental oil of…

A new spin on homemade vanilla ice cream
Do you have one of those fancy Cuisinart ice cream makers? I do! That was an awesome investment! If you’ve ever spent time looking at the label on your favorite store bought ice cream, you know there are surprising ingredients lurking in the mix. In an age when the effects of high fructose corn syrup are emmerging, it’s time to take the reins on what goes on top of the sugar cone at your house. An ice cream maker that doesn’t require salt, is just what the Dr. ordered! (teehee) Here’s the Green Tea Ice Cream Recipe that I teased my twitter and facebook followers with yesterday. Last night,…

Do what you say you are going to do…
Business Rule #1 – Scratch that! Life Rule #2 – Do what you say you are going to do! Sometimes we forget to do this. Especially if the “thing” we say we are going to do is not written down. My example in this post was written down earlier this year. The 2nd Day of this year to be precise! I had a blog post here on Dr. Flower about Martini glasses. Several folks dropped in to comment their thoughts. (psstt…I LOVE it when you guys do that!) Anne-Marie dropped in to say I’d won the random comment contest! yippe I said… and a martini glass for you on your…

Green Pest Control, sometimes all you need to do is ask!
Admittedly,we’ve had our contract pest control company for many years. As the truck pulled up last week for the guy to perform treatment, I posed the question. Do you have a green alternative treatment? You could have blown me over when he said, As a matter of fact we do. Would you be interested? Here’s our brochure. (psst… it’s Keystone Pest Control.) THAT my friends is the customer service we strive for at Dr. Flower’s Essentials!
