    How To Clip Rosemary

How do you clip rosemary in your yard? The first question I’d ask, is how old is your rosemary bush? If your rosemary bushes have been around as long as mine have, the method of clipping rosemary can be a bit more involved. I live in gardening zone 8 which means that it’s warm enough here in the Atlanta area for rosemary to over winter without dying. That’s not to say that is doesn’t have its set backs from time to time, but over all my rosemary bushes thrive. Thriving rosemary bushes means they grow fast and must be clipped often.  I usually remove the brown branches in the spring time…

    Stevia as sweetener, a threat?

Stevia Plant and Flower My Blog Tweet this morning:  “Stevia may be linked to genetic mutations in lab animals.” In its natural form? My doubt provokes research http://tinyurl.com/6k82ha In this linked article, it was stated that “Stevia may be linked to genetic mutations in lab animals.” This statement provokes this blog post that has required a little bit of research.  I’ve read for several years now that stevia failed the FDA as a safe sugar substitute and was then approved only as a dietary supplement.  Herbie folks (those that follow and study herbs) all asked the question why?  Most answered the question that it was really politics and money.  We…

Bentonite Clay – Where does it come from?

Where does it come from? Volcanic ash clay also known as sodium bentonite clay is formed when the ash, which results from a volcanic eruption, mixes with water. The result is clay, which contains an extensive concentration of a number of minerals. These minerals have been found to have a number of healthy benefits. Sodium Bentonite clay works by gathering an electrical charge as soon as it becomes hydrated. This electrical charge is part of what makes it so effective. The high mineral content and the electrical charge is what draws out the impurities and helps to absorb the toxins, heavy metal and other contaminants that can cause the blemishes…

Juniper berries – Faustine Clay Handmade Soap

Did you know that Juniper berries aren’t true berries? They are actually the female part of the pine cone for the juniper tree. Now you’d think that if something is called a berry, it would be a berry! Juniper trees being of the pine family though does make sense. Botanical: Juniperus communis Family: Cupressaceae (cypress) – Coniferae (conifer) Other common names: Common Juniper, Ground Juniper, Juniper Berries, Gin Berries This “berry” has been used as flavoring for gin and also in European cuisine for its distinguishing sharp, clear flavor. It tends to cut the gaminess of wild game. This berry’s use as a spice can be traced all the way…

I just bought some at the grocery store…rhubarb

I’m afraid it won’t grow in the new hot hot no water environment we have here in hotlanta. 🙁 Goodnews is that they do sell it at the grocery store!! I know I should be looking for produce that is local! Somethings are just on the exception list. *skips off to hunt down the Ohioan cousin that has the cool kind rhubarb pie recipe* Here’s some reading about rhubarb!  Did you know that rhubarb helps the ozone? But in 1995, two Yale scientists discovered that oxalic acid, found in rhubarb, helped neutralize CFC’s. Rhubarb to the rescue!

Turmeric in Citrus Blend handmade Soap

My original reasoning for adding turmeric to Dr. Flower’s Essentials Citrus Blend handmade soap bar was initially due to natural color. It seems that tumeric has many other good properties for skin care as well as culinary.
