    Klean Kanteen just in!

After reading Crunchy Domestic Goddesses Blog post “Getting kids on the bottle – water bottle, that is” and then doing a little bit of research for my own blog post “Plastic Recycle numbers, do you read plastic labels too?“,  I found that my beloved Nalgene water bottles could be causing harm to my family! ACK!  Bisphenol A, a compound in hard, clear polycarbonate plastics that mimics the effects of estrogen, has raised particular concern because it interferes with hormone levels and cell signaling systems. While it is important to mention that Nalgene no longer sells water bottles with BPA, they were not diligent in contacting customers to let them know…

High Fructose Corn Syrup contains mercury, scare tactic or fact?

To cut to the chase, it’s both.  It’s fact and an alarmist view point of the sky is falling. From my contacts on twitter, I was made aware of this article posted on the Washington Post’s Website. (here’s the article)   In it detailed how traces of mercury were found in High Fructose Corn Syrup.  I just shook my head as I read what I thought was another reason to avoid the stuff. I already do try to steer clear of it.  There are many good reasons to avoid HFCS with  mercury question aside. Diabetes, early childhood obesity, etc, etc. I’m not advocating there aren’t good issues for avoiding High…

Plastic Recycle numbers, do you read plastic labels too?

If you are new to recycling, perhaps you’ve wondered just what those numbers mean in the middle of the recycle symbol.  Most folks are aware that it helps folks in recycle facilities figure out how to sort the plastic for processing but how much more about them do you know? Here’s a short list that may help.  All plastic is not alike. If you turn on the news, you already know this and have heard of those that warn against using plastic for certain things. There are many warning for which plastics to use in the microwave or which kinds are greener, etc.  I figure let’s start with the basics…

Homemade peanut butter, hard to make?

If articles like this (Little Debbie Adds Snack Food to Salmonella Peanut Butter Recall) or this (http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html) worry you, it might be time to KNOW exactly what is in the food you eat. It may save you time, money, and health in the long run… Here are a few links on how to make peanut butter yourself: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Peanut-Butter http://www.mahalo.com/How_to_Make_Peanut_Butter – nice variations! http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A824410 Amazing that oil, peanuts, salt and a bit of molasses is really all the ingredients that you need. Be sure to stash your homemade peanut butter in the refrigerator…it cuts down on the oils going racid. 🙂 Do you remember when Kroger used to have the peanut…

Green Drink:Fresh Appletini, worth the trouble?

If you follow me on twitter, then you know that I got a Jack La Lane Power Juicer for Christmas… Psstt It was really given to my husband!  He pulled the goodie out of the box, cleaned it, set it up on the kitchen counter, and said “fix me a drink woman”! *laughin’*  That’s not exactly how it went because as he was inspiring the possibilities, he was really looking at our daughter too! We did some experimenting with different recipes in the book that came with the juicer.  Most turned out quite nice! When we made the fresh apple juice recipe with green granny smith apples, the green color…

    Sevananda Natural Foods Co-op

Yesterday I posted about the Cooking with Tea class that Life Chef (aka Asata) taught at the Sevananda Natural Foods Co-Op.  I had little time once I got to the store for the class to start so I quickly paid for the course and headed downstairs for the class.  After the class was over, I purposefully didn’t schedule anything to do so that I would have time to browse the market.  I had just tried many tasty dishes so the creative cooking juices were flowing by the time I was ready to shop! I grew up in the Atlanta area. I lived in a house in Morningside in my earliest…

The health of red wine, is it hype?

We’ve all heard that red wine is the healthiest of alcohol drinks we can consume. How true is it?  I’ve been doing a little bit of reading at the MayoClinic.  It seems that alcohol, no matter which form has the following good effects on the body: Raises high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol Inhibits the formation of blood clots Helps prevent artery damage caused by high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the “bad” cholesterol Now that’s NOT to say that drinking any alcohol doesn’t have other adverse effects that could out way these “good effects”. Otherwise, why would surgeon general post messages about pregnant women risks etc.  Red…
