Need help eliminating catalog mail in your mailbox?
When my parents came for an extended visit several months ago, I was in the position to get their mail for them. I was AMAZED at the amount of catalogs in the stack of only 3 days of mail! If your parents are in their upper years and have a bit of trouble getting around, they may have this same problem. Who could even if they had all day, have enough time to go through ALL of those catalogs? When the mountain is that big, it’s a bit daunting on how to reduce the number of catalogs. Yes, you could tackle calling to cancel each and every catalog company but…

CPSIA Blogging Day was yesterday! What does that mean?
I started this post yesterday, on CPSIA Blogging Day but things happened that prevented it being posted. The information is so important that I felt it worth posting even if a day late. CPSIA also known as Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act was passed in August 2008 with the intention of protecting customers from Companies selling harmful products. Everyone remembers the recent scares of lead based paint used on toys made in China and sent to the US. This is an example of what this CPSIA Act was intended to stop. As the Act currently stands, the wording was not completely thought through with a small or “micro” business in…

Dishwasher, How would you pick a new one?
As I write this post, my hubby is working on the dishwasher that has been pulled out and sitting in the middle of the kitchen. At some point today, this appliance will either be fixed and back working or it will be ready for replacement. Either way, the idea of choosing an environmentally smart dishwasher is on our minds. Energy Star has a slick website that is aimed at helping in these kinds of decisions. http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=dishwash.pr_dishwashers There are two spreadsheets you can download at the right column of the site, Qualified Dishwashers and savings calculator. These are the first two files I looked at. The qualified dishwashers is a long…

The health of red wine, is it hype?
We’ve all heard that red wine is the healthiest of alcohol drinks we can consume. How true is it? I’ve been doing a little bit of reading at the MayoClinic. It seems that alcohol, no matter which form has the following good effects on the body: Raises high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol Inhibits the formation of blood clots Helps prevent artery damage caused by high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the “bad” cholesterol Now that’s NOT to say that drinking any alcohol doesn’t have other adverse effects that could out way these “good effects”. Otherwise, why would surgeon general post messages about pregnant women risks etc. Red…

Stevia as sweetener, a threat?
Stevia Plant and Flower My Blog Tweet this morning: “Stevia may be linked to genetic mutations in lab animals.” In its natural form? My doubt provokes research http://tinyurl.com/6k82ha In this linked article, it was stated that “Stevia may be linked to genetic mutations in lab animals.” This statement provokes this blog post that has required a little bit of research. I’ve read for several years now that stevia failed the FDA as a safe sugar substitute and was then approved only as a dietary supplement. Herbie folks (those that follow and study herbs) all asked the question why? Most answered the question that it was really politics and money. We…

Gwinnett County Waste management consolidation
On January 1, 2009, Gwinnett county will be changing the waste management companies that serve our communities. I think it’s a sound and good idea! Especially when I hear that the idea is to help our community save energy and step up our recycling capabilities across the county. Go Gwinnett County Government! Currently, in my neighborhood, there are at least 3 different trash services that run trucks in our neighborhood. Some pick up on Wednesdays, but most pick up on Friday. It’s just flat a waste of energy to have that many trash trucks on the same roads of our county. Does it surprise me that the companies that have…

Aromatherapy, not just hype
What is Aromatherapy? – Aromatherapy is the practice of using volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well being. It is the main reason why the majority of Dr. Flower’s handmade soaps are made with herbs, infusions, and essential oils. There are many herbs that we think of for cooking that can also be helpful in that bathtub. One could go as for as to say they can transform your bathroom into a Home Spa for a whole lot less money than to go find a spa. In these times where being frugal is more necessary, I invite you to consider this in your holiday shopping. Don’t…

repost: Cancer or Germs? I’ll take the germs.
Cancer or Germs? I’ll take the germs. This is a really neat post from one of the blogs that I frequent, The green parent. Perhaps folks don’t understand the importance of organic or pesticide free things other than what they eat. Some times the cycle of polution eludes the smartest of folks. That is changing this year. There is a lot more awareness with the internet and folks are stepping up. We are all on this journey. Not everyone knew way back when that these things could effect us in such ways. We know now and we need to act upon our new knowledge to make a difference. I’m stepping…
