The story of stuff, needed now more than ever!

I’ve blogged about the story of stuff before.  Here we are at Christmas time with gifts on our lists and decisions on what to purchase seem a lot more relevant than this past summer. Folks are beginning to ask questions like, “How is the current economic situation affecting our attempts to “live greener”? If you’ve not played the video on the story of stuff site, It’s worth the 20 minutes to get the picture of our current system. We can evolve, re-evaluate, and adjust how we do things in our community, country, and world. It all starts with understanding where we stand now. Once we have a clear picture without…

Composting! It's not as hard as you think!

If you have followed anything related to gardening or green environmental news, composting is one of those things that you can do along the lines of “think globally and act locally”.  I can understand that some folk might be a bit intimidated by trying to compost. I’ve been reading on organic gardening boards how you really shouldn’t till your garden dirt and composting should be done right there among the plants in a “sheet composting” manner.  Sometimes the idea of dumping my scraps directly in the garden just doesn’t get me excited!  If the dirt really cooks, It makes great soil that is disease free.  I’ve used my own compost…

    Handmade Doggie Bones!

Looking for a special gift for someone with a furry crumb cruncher this Christmas? Handmade Christmas gifts are the best! (even if you didn’t hand make them!) Can’t you just envision a cute doggie bone cookie mix in a flour sack with cute doggie bone cookie cutter attached with a red ribbon?  Have you seen them in stores? Well let me tell you, I’ve tried some of those cutesy gourmet store bought doggie bone mixes and they just smell AWFUL!!  I don’t know what it was with one I tried, but the stench was not worth the cutesy gift! Now granted the mixes that I’ve used call for apple sauce…

    Movies that influence…

The movies that are selected at our house are probably not from the top 10 list of movies! It is a bit of a tradition in our house to watch a few movies on the TV than usual over the Thanksgiving Holiday.  I was fortunate enough to have been selected by a darling husband that is not a huge sports fan. There are few football/baseball/basketball games that this soap business owner has to suffer through! (Not to say that we don’t watch our share of formula one or bicycle racing! That’s another blog post or so…) Two movies that we watched over the holiday stand out for me.  They are…

    Gwinnett County Waste management consolidation

On January 1, 2009,  Gwinnett county will be changing the waste management companies that serve our communities.  I think it’s a sound and good idea! Especially when I hear that the idea is to help our community save energy and step up our recycling capabilities across the county.  Go Gwinnett County Government! Currently, in my neighborhood, there are at least 3 different trash services that run trucks in our neighborhood.  Some pick up on Wednesdays, but most pick up on Friday.  It’s just flat a waste of energy to have that many trash trucks on the same roads of our county. Does it surprise me that the companies that have…

    Aromatherapy, not just hype

What is Aromatherapy? – Aromatherapy is the practice of using volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well being. It is the main reason why the majority of  Dr. Flower’s handmade soaps are made with herbs, infusions, and essential oils. There are many herbs that we think of for cooking that can also be helpful in that bathtub.  One could go as for as to say they can transform your bathroom into a Home Spa for a whole lot less money than to go find a spa.  In these times where being frugal is more necessary, I invite you to consider this in your holiday shopping.  Don’t…

Bentonite Clay – Where does it come from?

Where does it come from? Volcanic ash clay also known as sodium bentonite clay is formed when the ash, which results from a volcanic eruption, mixes with water. The result is clay, which contains an extensive concentration of a number of minerals. These minerals have been found to have a number of healthy benefits. Sodium Bentonite clay works by gathering an electrical charge as soon as it becomes hydrated. This electrical charge is part of what makes it so effective. The high mineral content and the electrical charge is what draws out the impurities and helps to absorb the toxins, heavy metal and other contaminants that can cause the blemishes…

Poverty: It's blog action day 2008!

Caution! Ramble in progress! What do I know about poverty?  Very little actually. I’ve been very blessed in this life.  I know Bono from U2, Bob Geldof and all the others that organized LIVE Aid. Live Aid was a multi-venue rock music concert held on July 13, 1985.  It was a wonderful awareness campaign that actually worked! Thanks to those that worked hard in that organization and the paths and doors that have opened since then for Africa. (it’s still only a drop in the bucket.) Farm Aid came on the scene a bit after that if I remember. We are just now beginning to understand the importance of small…
