Energy Lighting – Part 2 – LED Lighting

LED Lighting is going through a metamorphosis. Take a look at the following link to see what I mean. (here)  “German scientists have discovered a method of hydrogen doping that allows the production of higher-performing LEDs and other semiconductors.”   This process evidently requires zinc oxide.  If you are interested, there’s a deeper explanation at this link from Science Daily here.  What is really means is that our concerns for the fluorescent bulbs that have mercury may not be our new standard of light bulb. It’s possible that as these breakthroughs continue, we will be on our way with a green energy love affair with LED technology as it becomes stronger,…

Energy Smart Lighting, what about the fancy fixtures?

Using the energy smart flouresent light bulbs in your average lamp or fixture is an eco-friendly, energy saving idea. What if your light fixture isn’t exactly set up for one of those spiral bulbs without looking like an eye sore? Maybe you are concerned about the small amount of mercury in the bulb anyway. And maybe you’d rather something that would save you on your energy bill that much more! Well here is my suggestion.  LED technology is getting snazzier by the minute. We aren’t the first ones with these type questions. It does not contain mercury and it’s energy consumption is even less than that of the flourescent bulb much…

    Crayons in the dryer, RUN!

Yep, kidlet is 6 years old and it’s happened to me!  I’ve read about mom’s concerned about how to clean up a crayon mess from the washer and dryer as well as how to get the crayon stains out of ALL of the cloths in the dryer. It’s one of those things you read and say ewww.. Glad that hasn’t happened to me! Then…IT HAPPENS!!    <- The “clue” as my kid called it…burnt orange. It’s murphy’s law working with us moms that it happens and/or is discovered at the most inopportune moments like when there are new clothes in the load.  But let’s face it, is there really a good…

CPSIA Blogging Day was yesterday! What does that mean?

I started this post yesterday, on CPSIA Blogging Day but things happened that prevented it being posted. The information is so important that I felt it worth posting even if a day late. CPSIA also known as Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act was passed in August 2008 with the intention of protecting customers from Companies selling harmful products. Everyone remembers the recent scares of lead based paint used on toys made in China and sent to the US.  This is an example of what this CPSIA Act was intended to stop.  As the Act currently stands, the wording was not completely thought through with a small or “micro” business in…

Plastic Recycle numbers, do you read plastic labels too?

If you are new to recycling, perhaps you’ve wondered just what those numbers mean in the middle of the recycle symbol.  Most folks are aware that it helps folks in recycle facilities figure out how to sort the plastic for processing but how much more about them do you know? Here’s a short list that may help.  All plastic is not alike. If you turn on the news, you already know this and have heard of those that warn against using plastic for certain things. There are many warning for which plastics to use in the microwave or which kinds are greener, etc.  I figure let’s start with the basics…

Homemade peanut butter, hard to make?

If articles like this (Little Debbie Adds Snack Food to Salmonella Peanut Butter Recall) or this (http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html) worry you, it might be time to KNOW exactly what is in the food you eat. It may save you time, money, and health in the long run… Here are a few links on how to make peanut butter yourself: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Peanut-Butter http://www.mahalo.com/How_to_Make_Peanut_Butter – nice variations! http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A824410 Amazing that oil, peanuts, salt and a bit of molasses is really all the ingredients that you need.
