Round Table Discussion after Food, Inc. movie…
It’s been several weeks since I blogged about seeing the movie Food, Inc. and there are a few more points that I wanted to share about that experience. After any movie, folks usually file out of the theatre, head towards the restroom, and/or head out the door of the theatre to their remaining evening. That was not quite completely the case with this movie, Food, Inc. There were folks that congregated in the theatre lobby that wanted to talk about what they had just seen. It was a bit of an impromtu discussion. Some of the passing comments that I heard echoed my thought that the movie was not as graphic as expected. (click here…

Tis the season…that poison ivy blooms!
As summer winds down and the kids go back to school, there are changes also happening in the backyard. The fall blooming plants are beginning to do their thing. Some of this is good….some of this is bad! Perhaps not as bad if you know how to identify it. In the past, I’ve blogged about how to identify poison ivy in your yard. What was missing from those pictures is what the plant looks like in full bloom. I’ve gotten close enough to the plant to snap a shot. Why is blooming bad? Well, blooming means more seeds which means this plant is going to procreate. ACK!! What do…

Food, Inc. – Nature as throughput
I and several like minded girlfriends got together last night to view the movie, Food, Inc. The FDA is in the midst of passing laws that involve trying to keep our food safe. Even if you live in a vacuum, the news of tainted food is getting to you. It’s been in peanut butter, poultry, spinach, tomatoes, beef to name a few. If you are a soap and/or cosmetics maker, you are aware of cosmetics being lumped into this same bucket. It is only recently that the subjects have been separated a bit. Food, Inc. was not as graphic as I was expecting yet the pictures helped drive home the point.…

Eco-Tie Dye, working out the kinks
As the summer fades and school starts, kidlet and I are feverishly marking off things on our summer list of things to do. One neat art project on the list is Eco- Tie Dye Tshirts that we saw on the show Emeril Green. While we most certainly are cooking show fanatics, Emeril Green is not one of our usual shows. I happened on this particular episode on Eco- Birthday Parties because of Jenn Savedge of “The green parent“. She mentioned on her facebook page that she was featured in this particular Emeril Green show. Did you know that Jenn is a former park ranger? Neat thing I didn’t know about her! Anyhoo, off to the…

A new spin on homemade vanilla ice cream
Do you have one of those fancy Cuisinart ice cream makers? I do! That was an awesome investment! If you’ve ever spent time looking at the label on your favorite store bought ice cream, you know there are surprising ingredients lurking in the mix. In an age when the effects of high fructose corn syrup are emmerging, it’s time to take the reins on what goes on top of the sugar cone at your house. An ice cream maker that doesn’t require salt, is just what the Dr. ordered! (teehee) Here’s the Green Tea Ice Cream Recipe that I teased my twitter and facebook followers with yesterday. Last night,…

What to do with Cucumbers from Rock Star Farms…
Hey there! While I’ve been active on twitter, it’s been a while since I’ve sat down for a blog post. If you are interested in what’s been going on, take a gander at the Dr. Flower twitter stream here or if you are a visual person, twitpic and Flickr work pretty well too! We spent July 4th up at Rock Star Farms this year. It was their 1st Annual July 4th Celebration. Rock Star Farms is a relatively new farm promoting organic gardening, homegrown organic food, biodynamic planting, compost, green water, water conservation, and green solar energy. It’s a Dr. Flower kind of farm! I’m sure the write ups on this special farm will be many…
