The Last Day of School
The last day of school is a significant milestone this year at our house. Our little “june bug” is about to be an upcoming 1st grader. A comment made to her just yesterday was that she will only have 12 more of those glorious last days in her school career. Her reaction was funny. ” I have 12 more days of school left?” Of course she doesn’t realize that she has 12 more grades to go through… It’s an interesting way to look at the last day of school. This summer there will be trips to the swimming pool, family trips, much playing in the yard with new and…

Seeing Pete Seeger at the New Orleans Jazz Fest 2009
How many famous folk have you seen in your life time? It’s one thing when you pay your $ for a ticket and they perform on a stage that is many feet before you. It’s another to see them face to face in a normal environment. How do you react? Those that know us at Dr. Flower are aware that local music is a bit of a passion. There’s something about meeting up with starving artists and hearing good music at a reasonable price. Those are only a few of the reasons that local music appeals. Folk music in particular is a favorite. Eddie’s Attic has a couple of bar…

Herbal tea is good for your new seedlings!
I saw this headline on an email from Organic Gardening: “Herbal tea for healthy seedlings”. It got my attention as I have been saving my tea leaves from past tea brewing for another project. What has happened is that I have way more discarded loose tea than I need for that project. To hear that my tea can have yet another use besides compost makes me want to learn more! “To prevent damping-off from killing seedlings, try watering them with chamomile tea. Make a strong tea with 3 teaspoons of dried chamomile in 6 cups of boiling water. Let the tea steep and cool. Water the seedlings two or three…

Joy of Sweet Potatoes
In our family, we have rediscovered the joy of sweet potatoes! I think it started out with an invite to a parent’s house where baked sweet potato was served instead of a russet baked potato. It was so yummy that I’ve been adding sweet potatoes to several of my main stay dishes since then. Did you know that sweet potatoes do fabulous in turkey soup? Well they do! We also cut up small potatoes and add a sweet potato to the mix when we saute potato slices as a side dish. So with all this talk about the joy of sweet potatoes AND it being prime planting season, it was…

If you've been wondering…spring planting!
Hey there Dr. Flower readers! Beginning to wonder where I am? If you follow me on twitter, then you know that the end of last week, I was in New Orleans for a long weekend. We had a wonderful time! Please check my twitpic stream to see the posted pictures. I’ll be blogging about the trip in the next few days. This time of year is prime planting season! Since I kicked up my heels watching fabulous music last weekend, I had to bust a move in the garden, at the school, and at the vet as the kitty is still not completely healed. By the way, we saw that…
