Thursday Seeds | Cry Fowl and Greet the Cheers

Winter in a southern state means that the birds are thinking about heading back north. They don’t do this is three days and live in a specific region the rest of the time like the snowbird humans of Florida. This is their part of life. They thrive on the move from place to place. Internal wiring helps them navigate to the kind oasis where what they need is plentiful with less dangers.

Berries of various shrubs are still available in a southern state. The cedar waxwings usually arrive for several days in January or February depending on the crop. If there aren’t that many, they don’t stay for long. If they are plentiful, even with danger, they will hang around. It’s always a marvel to see them move in. A charm or flock of these amazing birds might show up as extra ornament in the trees above. What they are after are those holly berries and all the other kinds of berries that they are experts at finding.  The best view is from the trees above.

We don’t even notice them, these shrubs that hold the fruit they crave. Game apps for the kids could be created to even highlight this kind of information with scientific names. Not all the bird facts are known by me and yet birding is a passion and a practice that started with my Mom and an outing sponsored by the Audubon Society.

And so who is cheering?  The cedar wax wings.  “We are here,” could be what they are saying. And we greet the cheers with a snap of a photograph. #seeds #cedarwaxwings
