SLS beware! – Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

The internet is a marvelous place full of information. Duh!

You are going to find two if not more sides to most subjects discussed, written about, posted, etc.

Something was brought to my attention via a poll I took from another handmade soaper’s blog.  I’m networked with her via twitter. Her poll was about Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and whether her customers avoid this ingredient in their soap choice.  I sent my answer and behold the results of the poll were a bit astonishing.

At the time I took the poll, 69% did not know what Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is. !!! How can that be?

Well…it can…not everyone lives and breathes soap like us soap nerds at Dr. Flower’s Essentials.  This means we need to get the word out! I’ve posted on this blog about SLS before (click here to see)

Shift your spending to Safer products! It’s not only good for the Mother Earth, it’s good for you!

You’ll find articles on the web refuting that SLS does not directly cause cancer. Some of the points they highlight is that the studies were not specific, large enough, complete enough to make a conclusion that SLS causes cancer.

I have to tell you my opinion as a soapmaker regarding SLS possibly causing cancer.  The facts don’t prove it causes cancer beyond any doubt. Cancer is everywhere and clearly we don’t have a handle on the causes. SLS is suspect enough that:

  1. it’s not going on my skin.
  2. It’s not going on my families’ skin.
  3. AND It’s not going on my customer’s skin when they purchase products from me.

Happy Washing!

P.S. There will be more info to follow…stay tuned. *wink*
