Climate Change- one step at a time…
Dr. Flower’s Essentials is proud to be among the other 9,153 blogs (WOW) that are set to blog about Climate Change on this 15th day in October. Climate change is a real threat to everyone and anything living. There are folks that will set you off in a direction of alarm just to get your attention. You aren’t going to find that here on our essential blog, nope. “Steady as she goes…” Do YOU want to make a difference? Do you feel a bit overwhelmed and pulled in many directions? Is the sky falling?
STOP….take a deep breath….and listen to your inner voice. You CAN make a difference by doing little things each day. You can’t fix it all in an hour as much as many many people wish it were so. It’s going to take a constant plod on the journey’s trail, one foot in front of the other. If you read through many of the stories and posts over this entire blog, you’ll notice gentle nudges towards effecting Climate change. I was just reading some wise words here on Monica’s blog that ring true every day. (Bit of Wisdom 16) – Basically the premise is to make one small change and stick with it. Once you have that one small change down to a habit, pick a new small change and stick with it. Before long, you have made serious cummulative changes without ever being overwhelmed but yet you’ve made a serious impact toward your goal. (In this case, we mean Climate Change.)
When the alarmist, the sky is falling, folk come to call, you’ll know in your heart that you are doing your part.
Here are a few short things we can start with:
- Keep Grocery Bags in your trunk to pull out and reuse when you go grocery shopping. (Yes, the canvas ones are nice…don’t have them? So what! Reuse the plastic ones. You know they are strong enough!)
- Drink lots of water from your own water bottle. We like Klean Kanteen but they aren’t the only ones out there!
- Consider a carpool in to work or better yet, several work from home days! (not everyone can do that…pick another!)
- Go try a Farmer’s Market – Many are winding down this time of year…make plans in the spring! Support your local farmers!
- Ask for green pest control
- Use organic fertilizer on your home garden and lawn, we use Earth Balance Organics
- Start a compost bin
- Contiously turn out the light when you leave a room
- Change your light bulbs to energy saving types like flourescent or LED
- Learn about the plastic recycle numbers
- Need help eliminating catalog mail in your mailbox?
- Ask yourself, “how can I….” and if you don’t have the answer, ask someone else.
These are only suggestions that I’m betting you’ve heard many times before. If you do all of those, bravo! If you prefer different ones, let your fingers do the walking and get creative. You’ll see many suggestions on blogs going on today. Pick one and go!
Happy Washing!
