Herbs to plant = Herbie heaven!
There is something so gratifying about setting plants in fertile soil. They just look healthy and green in the contrast to the rich black to red soil that they sit in. Yes, red clay is a way of life in Georgia. As long as it has a balance of other nutrients, it’s becomes a necessary if not welcomed component of good garden soil.
This week, it is herb planting time at Rock Star Farms. The farm has grown by leaps and bounds over this past year. Last year, the medicine wheel was sporting many vegetables along side herbs. This year, vegetable garden beds surround the medicine wheel. The wheel can now be planted with herbs that will attract the beneficial insect kingdom to the whole farm as if it’s target like structure was a beacon for a healthy ecosystem. I have been honored and really quite excited to be included in planning, work and now planting of the herbs within the wheel.
I brought along some of my “herbie friends “[those that love, grow, use herbs] to the party as well. In future years, Rock Star Farms will most likely be in a place to do their own seedling starts. This year, time and setup did not agree with doing this. There’s nothing like getting a little help from your friends. Michelle Brown and Pat Stewart of Possum Creek Herb Farm helped us out in a grand way. Many of the herbs planted yesterday were sourced from their herb farm. I knew from the few herb plants ordered last year, that the plant quality would be excellent and these folks did deliver. I doubled my personal order of herbs and have my work cut out for me in my own circle garden. Take a look at the fun of laying out the herbs at Rock Star Farms.
Here are a few of the plant facts that were considered in plant layout: Plant growth height, companion planting, sun location, plant growth spacing, annual and perennial, and biodynamic calendar- flower day. It’s always good to know which of these lovelies will come back next year. Another plant fact that was considered is how the herbs would be used. Some of them would be for medicinal use, others for culinary, and others for both! Between Amy and I, several spreadsheets were created that will make next year’s planting that much easier.
If planting time is getting away from you this year, don’t fret so much. Treat your soil right and then pop on over to Possum Creek Herbs for a look see at what you can plant.
Happy Washing!
