Ten neat things about the Garlic plant…

garlic-top10Ten neat things that I’ve discovered or rediscovered about garlic.  Garlic sauteed in olive oil is a comforting smell in our home.  This plant is packed with legends, stories, science and more. Some of this information you know, some facts you don’t and maybe there’s a few that you’ve forgotten.

  1. Legend is that it will repel vampires….what it really repels is bacteria, fungi, and yeast.  Yayy!
  2. Garlic cloves peel easier if you smash them first with the flat side of a knife.
  3. Wash hands with any stainless steel kitchen tool to remove the odor of garlic.
  4. Garlic is one of the main ingredients in the four thieves blend that is reported to have prevented persons from falling ill with a plague.
  5. Garlic is more effective than penicillin against Typhus. In fact, it contains a component called Allicin that’s bacterial action is report to be the equivalent of 1% penicillin. Psst…cooking garlic actually reduces its effectiveness.
  6. Garlic  is a traditional cure against worms and parasites in pets and people. It seems the Allicin sulfur compounds are also noxious to parasites.
  7. Garlic is recommended for several respiratory ailments and high blood pressure and also has anti-clotting properties. If you are on a blood thinner, this might be important to know!
  8. A garlic eaters group could never be anonymous – If you can’t smell it, your in!  (teehee, attempt at humor) Seriously though, if the odor does not bother you, 1-2 raw cloves a day is a great addition to your healthy diet.
  9.  Egyptians ate it while building the pryamids, Isrealites ate it before leaving Egypt, and Romans took it for strength in battle since it is the herb of Mars.
  10. Garlic plants can be started from seeds or cloves though the later is the easiest and fastest means of cultivation. As a companion plant, the plants that benefit the most are cabbage, eggplant, tomatoes, and fruit trees.

If the garlic facts mentioned are of interest to you, let your fingers do the searching! Here’s an article you might want to read.

This quote drew me to this article also: “More than 1,800 scientific studies detail garlic’s chemical complexity and multifaceted roles in preventing or treating disease.”

These tidbits are only the tip of the iceberg regarding this wonderful plant. Do you remember the last time you had some?

Happy Washing!
