Little things for your guests…

If you haven’t guessed it by now, our family is hooked on Food Network shows. We watch many of the shows that come from this network because for the most part, there is little worry that the subject matter will be upsetting for a “young lady in training”. When you have young ones, suddenly your attitude shifts regarding what is OK and not OK to view over the tellie. This summer, we spent a lot of time watching the Next Food Network Star.
It’s a little bit funny as we are not TV reality type folks in the least. It was very novel years ago when MTV threw a bunch of 20 somethings from all walks of life into a house to live. The umpteen iterations of shows that have gone on since…well are a word we try not to use at our house, boring. With all that said, we did get slightly caught up in this show and since the latest Star has been picked, Melissa d’Arabian, we sort of follow her new show- 10 Dollar Dinners. It’s appealing on several levels. Who’s not interested in saving money? You combine that objective with our conscious for the environment and meals suddenly get more complicated. Now that I’ve thrown up several directions for additional blog posts just trying to give you the background, I’ll continue with my thought.
I think it was her first show. She’s a little bit nervous and her newness is still evident. Would we be aware of these things had we not gotten to know her in the previous series? probably not. Even with all that said and even perhaps because of all that, this thought that she conveyed while making the potato torte came through loud and clear. She showed us how to make the pie crust and as she did so, she talked about how important it is to make folks feel that you did something special for them. You took the extra effort to do something that was out of your way and homemade. This torte was made from scratch in her own kitchen. It comes out of the oven with the fabulous homemade smells trailing it. You can tell it even without “smellovision”. It’s special. It’s comfort food with the “just like momma used to make” vibe to it. What’s not to love?
With our awareness of germs and the importance to wash hands regularly, why can’t homemade soap be the same thing? The more we learn about health and science, we understand what’s better for us. Antibacterials are not good for us, regular soap is better. Even if you are visiting someone just for an evening meal, chances are you’ve been to the restroom or kitchen sink to “wash up” before eating. If you are a spend the night guest, your restroom time spent might include a shower. With holidays just around the corner, entertaining schedules tend to step up. If you entertain, why not set out the best all natural handmade soap in town for your guests to wash up with? Don’t save the good soap, use it! Use it often and get more if you need it! 😉 Show your guests that you went out of your way to do something special for them.
