Plant those Blueberry bushes in the yard and forget them till summer!

This Blog post in inspired by an article that I found from Chelseagreen’s blog “Grow Berries in Your Low-Light Urban Space  I found the article on twitter and retweeted the link also adding that I have 2 bushes in my yard.

@Chelseagreen requested a picture of my blueberries. I was not in a place where I could go find the good pictures of the bushes.  In the article, it talks about how low light is not a problem with these bushes. My spot where I planted them gets direct sunlight for most of the day.  To offer the lovelies a little bit of shade, I have Canna Lilies that sprout and grow up to provide shade in the hot August heat of Georgia.  It really works out great.

Since I’ve planted these, I’ve done very little to them other than pull the berries. (YUM!) and add pinestraw to keep them moist on those same hot summer days.  Blue berries are acid loving. So even if you don’t compost, you can add your coffee grounds straight to the soil to give them an extra compost boast. (pssst…you should consider composting and how easy it is.  Take a look here.)

When you pick out blueberrie bushes, be sure to get two different varieties. They cross pollenate to make fruit.  Here is an outstanding nursery to browse from that is also mentioned in the Chelsagreen article. Raintree Nursery
