Green Drink:Fresh Appletini, worth the trouble?

If you follow me on twitter, then you know that I got a Jack La Lane Power Juicer for Christmas… Psstt It was really given to my husband!  He pulled the goodie out of the box, cleaned it, set it up on the kitchen counter, and said “fix me a drink woman”! *laughin’*  That’s not exactly how it went because as he was inspiring the possibilities, he was really looking at our daughter too!

We did some experimenting with different recipes in the book that came with the juicer.  Most turned out quite nice! When we made the fresh apple juice recipe with green granny smith apples, the green color was SO luscious that it made me wonder if we shouldn’t have an Appletini night one day in our future.  In that fresh apple juice recipe, it recommended that we use a sweet and tart apple to balance the flavors. When I set out to make the Appletini, I only used the granny smith apple figuring tart would work nicely with vodka.

All was great at the start…lovely green color of the juice had me excited!  Minutes later, green began to migrate to brown. Apples oxidize and turn brown remember? *ding* I had the idea of adding lemon juice to tone down the oxidation.  While it did tone it down some, it was not the bright beautiful green that it was the minute it came down the spout of the juicer any longer. 🙁  I think the lemon juice would have to be at a higher percentage to have really worked on keeping the color. It would have been an apple/lemon-tini.  On the flip side, the drink was very nice…but deadly! When you can’t taste the vodka, much like a hunch punch from college days, one can drink WAY more than one should!  And so there you have it! An experiment with the juicer! May there be many more experiments that hit the healthier side!  In writing this article, I’ve found that Jack LaLane has a juice club on his website! I can’t wait to dive in there!

Do you have a juicer at home? What kind?  How do you use it? Thanks for reading!

Happy Washing!

I actually surprised my husband with a juicer this Christmas as well! We’ve found our favorite standby juice to be Apple, Carrot and Ginger. We even juiced a pile of cherries into that mixture one day. That was delicious!
